    New Frontiers in Optical Technologies

    10-14 August 2009, Tampere, Finland
    3 ECTS

    The fifth International Summer School on 'New Frontiers in Optical Technologies' a biennial event held at Tampere University of Technology, is scheduled to take place on 10 - 14 August 2009. This year's event will build on the success of previous Schools, in particular that of 2007, which attracted a record 150 participants from 19 countries. In 2009 the School will once again offer students and researchers the opportunity to exchange scientific ideas, create contacts, and gain inspiration from leading researchers at the cutting edge of technology.

    Honorary mention to ORC in the national INNOFINLAND contest

    INNOFINLAND 2008 prizes of the President of the Republic

    INNOFINLAND 2008: Climate and energy

    The national INNOFINLAND 2008 prizes of the President of the Republic were given out for the 15th time at the National Board of Patents and Registration of Finland on 16 December 2008.
    Five INNOFINLAND prizes of equal value and three honorary mentions were awarded in the contest. The winners received an INNOFINLAND sculpture and a certificate of honour.
    The prize-winners represent innovative Finnish companies that have responded to the needs of both consumers and companies in a creative way.

    The theme of INNOFINLAND 2008 was ”Climate and energy”. This topical theme brings forward companies that have come up with the idea to develop products and services that help stop global warming and preserve energy. This year 161 competitors entered the contest. In relation to the number of entries, Uusimaa, Satakunta, Etelä-Pohjanmaa and Pohjanmaa were the most active provinces to participate in the contest.

    Together with the chair of the INNOFINLAND jury, CEO Matti Enäjärvi, and chair of the working committee, Executive Director Juha Jutila, President of the Republic of Finland Tarja Halonen presented the national INNOFINLAND 2008 prizes to the following companies:

    • Biovakka Suomi Oy, Vehmaa, clean energy from a biogas plant
    • Finnchain Oy, Rauma, a floating sludge removal system for sewage treatment
    • iLoq Oy, Oulu, an advanced and self-powered electric locking system
    • Preseco Oy, Espoo, a comprehensive solution for the treatment of abattoir waste
    • St1 Biofuels Oy, Helsinki, biofuel from waste

      Honorary mentions were awarded to:
    • Enervent Oy, Porvoo, efficient energy recovery in ventilation systems
    • Korpikorpi Pikakuivaus Oy, Vantaa, a drying system and service concept for buildings suffering from damp
    • Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), Tampere, commercialisation of compound semiconductor-based optoelectronics

    ORC wins the Pirkanmaa Innoisuomi Prize 2008

    ORC has won Inno-Suomi 2008 Pirkanmaa Prize (Nov. 11. 2008), and will compete for the National Inno-Suomi 2008 Prize to be given by the President of Finland on December 16 in Helsinki.

    New Frontiers in Optical Technologies

    The fourth International Summer School on “New Frontiers in Optical Technologies' is scheduled to take place on 13–17 August 2007, and is a continuation of similar successful international events ORC has organized in 2001, 2003, and 2005. The purpose of the Summer School is to provide broad coverage of new research topics related to optics and photonics technologies. The Summer School is worth 3 ECTS, provided students pass the exam held on the final day of the School.

    Public Service Medal awarded to Markus Pessa


    Jarl-Thure Eriksson, the rector of TUT presented the Public Service Medal to Professor Markus Pessa on 1 February. The Public Service Medal is awarded by the President of Finland in recognition of long service in excess of three decades for the good of the state.

    EpiCrystals won the European Venture Contest 2006
    The Final Jury & Award Ceremony took place in Lisbon on 4 December. Competition was fierce but there can be only one winner. This year's title went to EpiCrystals (Finland).

    Runners-up were Multiwave Photonics (Portugal) and SensL (Ireland). The Public Award for Best Elevator Pitch went to CVWarehouse.  

    The European Venture Contest is the only pan-European competition with an exclusive focus on top technology ventures that have the ambition and potential to reshape their industry and conquer the international market.

    The public defense of the Matei Rusu's doctoral thesis on the 24th of November 2006

    Matei Rusu’s doctoral thesis “Frequency conversion using ultrafast fiber lasers” deals with the generation of ultrashort (10-12 seconds-long) laser pulses in the visible and ultraviolet spectral regions. The work addresses various aspects of ultrashort pulse generation, from optimization of the laser source to techniques for optical frequency conversion. Both simulation and experimental results are presented, along with suggestions for compact and reliable generators of ultrashort laser pulses.

    The public defense of the dissertation will take place on the 24th of November 2006 at 12.00, in Auditorium TB104 in Tietotalo building. Professor Sergei Turitsyn from Aston University (UK) will act as opponent, whereas Professor Oleg Okhotnikov (ORC, TUT) will be the custos.     Prof. Shuji Nakamura visited at ORC

    The 2006 Millennium Technology Prize winner, Prof. Shuji Nakamura, received the prize on 8 September in Helsinki. During this visit in Finland, Prof. Nakamura visited also in Tampere and at ORC where possible co-operation was discussed.

    Tekes FinNano program - LCC Finland in nano tech 2006 in Japan

    A group of Finnish companies and research organisations made a successful visit to nano tech 2006, one of the largest nanotechnology events worldwide, held in Tokyo, Japan on 21-23 February. The exhibition attracted over 45000 visitors.

    Participants at Finland’s joint stand were:

    Beneq, Genano, Dekati, Planar, Laser Competence Center Finland, Technology Centre Hermia, University of Jyväskylä, Jyväskylä Science Park and VTT.

    In addition to the exhibition, the Finnish group visited leading Japanese nanotechnology research laboratories at NEC Corporation, Fujitsu, AIST and RIKEN.

    The visit has already lead to several promising new contacts and feedback from the participants has been very positive. The visit was organized  by Tekes FinNano program together with Spinverse Consulting and FMNT.

    Prof. Markus Pessa elected a Foreign Associate of The US National Academy of Engineering

    Prof. Markus Pessa, Director of ORC, has been elected a Foreign Associate
    of the United States National Academy of Engineering (NAE) for his "outstanding contributions to optoelectronic devices, and for exceptional leadership in establishing new semiconductor industries in Finland". He is the first Foreign Associate of NAE from Finland. Eight other foreign associates and 76 US members were elected at the same time.

    NAE is a highly appreciated academy in the US. The membership includes nobelists like Prof. Zhores Alferov, the Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and many top leaders and scientists from giant industries such as IBM, Microsoft, and General Motors. Among the new foreign associates is the President of Chinese Academy of Engineering. The election of new members bring the total US membership to 2216 and the number of foreign associates to 186.

    The Induction Ceremony will be held on October 15, 2006 in Washington DC. The Ceremony is the formal inauguration of the new members and foreign associates into the Academy.     Pekka Savolainen joined Technology Centre Hermia

    Dr. Pekka Savolainen has joint the Hermia Technology Centre. Pekka will act as Manager of LCC Finland. One of his tasks is to build a significant laser cluster that would include tens of Finnish and foreign companies (currently, LCC Finland has 21 member companies) and generate other activities in the field of laser applications.

    He has more than 13 years experience in research and development of laser diodes first at the ORC / TUT and then at Modulight Inc. with which he was for several years.
